Obituary For Curtis Jr. Newton

Services are scheduled for 11:00 Friday at Priest Creek Missionary Baptist Church for Curtis Newton, Jr., 73, of Hattiesburg, who died October 6, 2020 in Aurora, Colorado.

Elder Fredrick Goins will officiate.

Interment will be at South Hill Cemetery

Curtis attended Depriest Consolidated schools until Earl Travillion Attendance Center was built, where he was an active member of the Earl Travillion Tigers band, where he played the trumpet and the Tuba, under the leadership of Dr. Jimmy James. He was also an active participant in the Chorus, under the leadership of Mr. James Ratliff. Upon graduation from ETAC, he attended college at Mississippi Valley State College; he was a member of the MVSC band that participated in the Rose Bowl Parade. Prior to him obtaining a degree, he entered the United States Army, where he served faithfully and was honorably discharged. During his tour in the military, he served one tour in Saigon, Vietnam (currently called Ho Chi Minh City). He met and fell in love with Shirley Williams and they became husband and wife. There were four children born to this union; Curtis III, Eulora, Cheryl and Angela. He began working with the United States Postal Services in 1968 where he remained until retirement in 2010, after 42 years of dedicated service. Curtis always enjoyed singing; he sang Bass with *1st Class Singing Group (A Group formed by Chicago Mail Carriers Wayne Watts, Jimmy Burkes Norbert White and Matthew White) “First Class performed all over the city of Chicago to include the Regal Theater. *Progressive Community Church of Chicago (Bass Singer and Treasurer of Choir) *Victory Apostolic Church *AARP 50th Anniversary Winning Choir directed by Grammy/Stellar winner Ricky Dillard. He sang with Vickie Winan on stage at The Gospel fest at St Thomas Virgin Island. He was also a Deacon at Progressive Church. He was an avid bowler and member of several bowling teams and the 300 Club until 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents Curtis Newton, Sr. and Katie Benjamin Newton, his grandparents Otis and Mamie Blue, Mary and Elliott Stewart and Matthew Newton; his brother Otis J. Newton. He leaves to cherish his memory his fiancé’ Dr. Barbara J. Hall of Chicago, Illinois; three daughters Eulora (Scott) Thompson, Cheryl (Jimmy) Gilliand and Angela Newton all of Chicago, Illinois; two sons Curtis (Sharondalyn) Newton III of Powder Springs, Georgia and Antoine Curtis Liggins of Chicago, Illinois; 7 grandchildren Ashley Sellers, Caelan Newton, Amber Newton all of Powder Springs, Georgia; Jasmine Taylor-Newton and Brienna Taylor of Waukegan Illinois, Kerry Taylor Jr. of Chicago, Illinois, Alexis Legina Liggins ofChicago; four sisters Doris H. White and Hollis L. Hall of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Victoria (Avaline) Fairley of Denver, Colorado and Ruby D.(George) Fairley of Detroit, Michigan; a sister-in-law Irene Newton of St Augustine, Florida; a godson Joe Hall of Chicago, Illinois; god-grandson Zareion Hall of Chicago, Illinois; his cuz Cheryl Hardy of Bolingbrook, Illinois; and a host of other relatives and friends.
